What is CEREC®?

Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramic (CEREC®) technology is the process of creating alveolar restorations. These refurbishments are used to repair the damage caused to your teeth from decay, injury, or any other reasons. CEREC® method saves time and gives better results by taking advantage of the advanced technology to restore the patient’s teeth with a crown, inlay, or onlay. CEREC® is usually made up of strong ceramic.

The restorations are designed and created using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computer-Aided Manufacturing. The designs are made from the impressions with computer software and then passed to a unit that fabricates ceramic restoration.

How is the CEREC® process done?

Patients may need to put a crown on their teeth for a variety of reasons. Crowns are dental caps that cover a tooth that is decayed through filling, recently undergone root canal therapy, or crack.

CEREC® method uses 3D imaging software to make a complete replication of your teeth. Experts at Bonita Family Dental take X-rays and images of your mouth with the CEREC® machine. With these photographs, a 3D model of your mouth is created. CAD software then focuses on the parts of the model that need to be repaired.

Once the 3D model and the areas to be restored have been highlighted, the system will create the restorative piece from a ceramic block. The piece created by the machine will colour-match your natural teeth.

The CEREC® machine generally completes the process within 20 minutes.

What are the advantages of CEREC® treatment?

CEREC® is extremely convenient. If you need a crown, inlay, or onlay, you can get your teeth restored. Traditionally, the procedure required two sittings. During the first sitting, the dentist cleans the tooth, makes a mold, and places a temporary restoration on the tooth. After two weeks when the permanent restoration is ready, the dentist can remove the temporary fix and place the permanent one.

With CEREC® crown technology, a crown on your damaged tooth can be placed in just one appointment. In the CEREC® treatment, the dentist uses CAD and CAM to capture digital images of your tooth and jaw, design a crown, and then create that crown for installation at the Bonita Family Dental. A CEREC® crown can quickly bring your smile back and regain your confidence.

CEREC® in Chula Vista uses solid ceramic materials instead of pressed ceramic and metal. CEREC® restorations can withstand mild chewing to last for years. The lifespan of a CEREC® restoration is longer. As an added benefit, the colour of CEREC® ceramic is like the colour of your natural teeth, making the restoration virtually unnoticeable.
