What are veneers?
Veneers are mainly used for cosmetic purposes, to improve the shape, size, and color of a patient’s teeth. Veneers are also used to repair a damaged tooth. This can be achieved by reshaping, improving the structure or the color of a tooth, and closing small spaces.
Dental veneers can be made from porcelain or resin composite materials. Porcelain veneers are a preferable choice as they resist stains better than resin veneers. They also better simulate the light-reflecting properties of natural teeth.
Veneers have been used for almost 50 years and with the advancement of technologies, though the techniques have changed, the purpose remains very similar. Veneers look more natural than any other restoration. They could easily be mistaken for natural teeth.
What is the veneer process?
Getting a dental veneer usually requires three trips to the dentist – one for consultation and two to make and apply the veneers. One tooth or many teeth can undergo the veneering process at the same time.
The veneer process can span from applying just a few veneers to teeth that are damaged or discolored, to applying veneers to all the visible teeth. Whether you require a cosmetic touch-up or an entirely new smile, the process will be the same.
At your first appointment, dentists at Bonita Family Dental prepare for the veneer installation process by creating the mold for your custom-made veneers. One of our highly-trained cosmetic specialists will remove the thinnest layer of enamel from the surface of your teeth, which is done to make sure the veneers fit properly. Then, they will make an impression of your teeth which is used in our lab for the custom veneer manufacturing process.
The Veneer Fitting
Once your veneers are ready, the dentist will begin by etching and preparing the surface of each tooth that will receive veneers ensuring that nothing gets in the way of the adhesive process. Then, a special cement and light source is applied between the surface of your tooth and the back of the veneer to bond the two together securely. The dentist will continue this process until all your veneers are securely in place, and you get a beautiful smile.
